1. Education Vision

The Graduate School of Korean Language and Literature reflects the educational goal of being a “leading international institution in Korean language, literature, and culture education and research.” The educational vision focuses on “cultivating global talents” and “nurturing overseas experts”.

 

2. Educational Objectives

To fulfill the major educational goal of becoming a “world-class institution in Korean language, literature, and culture education,” the Graduate School aims to establish its position internationally, deepen the qualitative research in Korean language, literature, and culture, and globally disseminate the research outcomes. The Graduate School is committed to providing a research-centered environment to students, enhancing international research capabilities, and consolidating expertise based on accumulated achievements.

In pursuit of the education vision, the Graduate School of Korean Language and Literature sets the following nine specific educational goals:

Creative Convergence Major (CCM) in Korean Language and Literature at Yonsei University

 

The Creative Convergence Major (CCM) in Korean Language and Literature at Yonsei University is designed to lead the globalization of Korean language, literature, and culture and nurture innovative talents capable of solving societal issues in the Fourth Industrial Revolution era. CCM focuses on “Translation of Korean Language, Culture, and Literature,””‘Contents and Education of Korean Language, Culture, and Literature,” and “Exhibition and Planning of Korean Culture.”

 

CCM admits students through a separate screening process upon entering graduate school. However, for Korean literature and general graduate students, a change to the CCM major can be recommended by the major professor and decided upon by the operating committee until the second semester of the master’s program. The admission process for CCM may include additional written and oral examinations, depending on the need. The admission documents include a major design plan, and the study plan should consist of a portfolio proving one’s existing activities and a proposal for planning and executing cultural contents.

 

In CCM, students must choose one of the three specialized fields (Translation, Contents and Education, Exhibition and Planning). A minimum of 18 30 credits required for graduation must be earned in the Department of Korean Language and Literature. The remaining credits can be obtained from courses offered by other departments or universities. CCM students take two subjects in the qualification exam: ⓵ one of the comprehensive exams in Korean language, modern literature, or classical literature, and ⓶ CCM (Translation, Contents and Education, Exhibition and Planning). The major professor or external experts prepare the exam questions for CCM. To obtain a degree, students must submit a thesis, including a research project plan, and undergo evaluation by the operating committee based on the thesis and project outcomes.

 

Key themes and research areas within CCM include:

 

Digital Korean Studies: Research on the digitization of Korean literature, transforming low-level data of Korean literature into digital resources, globalizing and disseminating Korean literature through digital networks, and developing programs to convert humanities data into digital content.

Development of Korean Language, Literature, and Culture Education Contents: Development of educational content using language, literature, and culture-related content, development of digital programs using language, literature, and culture-related content.

Translation of Korean Literature and Culture Contents: Translation of texts and contents related to Korean literature and culture into foreign languages, research on introducing and disseminating Korean literature and culture to world literature and culture.

Exhibition, Performance, and Planning of Korean Language, Literature, and Culture Contents: Research on language and literature-related content, planning exhibitions, performances, and publications based on Korean literature and culture content.

 

 

Major Courses for international students

 

International students are allowed to take up to a total of 12 credits in major courses. Examples of major courses for international students include:

Introduction to Korean Information Education as a Foreign Language

Korean Classical Literature as Foreign Literature

Curriculum for Acquiring Korean Language Teacher Certification

 

Students aiming to obtain a Korean language teacher certification must take specific courses related to obtaining the ‘Korean Language Teacher Certification.’ The required curriculum for accreditation includes the following areas:

 

1. Introduction to Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language

2. Practical Korean Language Education Method

3. Korean Language Education Theory

4. Korean Linguistics

5. Korean Language Teaching Material Development

6. Practical Korean Language Teaching Practice

7. Internship in Korean Language Teaching

8. (Note: Major courses for international students can be substituted for the corresponding courses required for obtaining the Korean Language Teacher Certification.)

International Exchange of Researchers and Management of Research Achievements and Plans in Foreign Universities and Research Institutions

 

The Graduate School of Korean Language and Literature contributes to the global sharing and dissemination of Korean language, literature, and culture research through collaboration with foreign universities and research institutions. It operates joint and multiple degree programs and engages in collaborative research with foreign universities and research institutions. Additionally, it administers short and long-term overseas training programs for graduate students and operates systems to attract and support outstanding international students. Furthermore, the school actively conducts educational and research programs utilizing foreign scholars.
