Curriculum roadmap

How to complete coursework

Students majoring in Korean language and literature are advised to first take the <Foundational> course (a required major course) before proceeding to <Common> courses (major elective), <Expanded> courses (major elective), and <Advanced> courses (major elective), in that order. As there are various specific subfields, utilizing the roadmap for each area to select and take classes is recommended. Additionally, not all courses listed in the curriculum are offered every semester, so checking the courses available each semester is essential.

The recommended course progression for students majoring in Korean language and literature is as follows:

Foundational → Common → Expanded → Advanced.

∘ Foundational Course: Basic Course in Korean Literature (Major Required)

∘ Common Course: General Course in Korean Literature (Major Elective)

∘ Expanded Course: Courses expanding knowledge in Korean Literature (Major Elective)

∘ Advanced Course: Courses deepening and applying advanced knowledge in Korean Literature (Major Elective)

Foundational Courses

Students majoring in Korean language and literature must enroll in the <Foundational> courses. These courses are designed for students admitted to the Korean Language and Literature Department to understand the academic nature of the department and acquire fundamental knowledge in the major field. Through these courses, students can develop a scholarly foundation for approaching the language and literature of Korea. For students admitted since the academic year 2013, the following four courses—[Understanding Korean Literature], [First Steps in Korean Linguistics], [What Is Literature?], and [Understanding Classical Korean Literature]—must all be completed as part of the <Foundational> courses.
